Elsecar Heritage Railway has its roots in the South Yorkshire coal industry when, in 1850, the line was built to carry iron and coal from Elsecar to Mexborough. Sadly, the engines made their final runs in 1964 when Cortonwood Colliery closed.
In 2006, Elsecar Heritage Railway was formed to breathe new life into the line. Originally running from Elsecar to Hemingfield a 2014 lottery granted started the process of re-laying the track to Cortonwood. Operated and maintained, like many other Heritage Railways, by a team of volunteers, offers you the opportunity to relive the age of steam. And, for the younger generation it is an excellent way to get up close to a real engine for the first time.
We run a variety of steam and diesel engines throughout the year with some very popular seasonal specials. Plus, we also run experience events for the enthusiast, with the footplate courses being a firm favorite.
