Traditional Life On The Isle of Man
Traditional Life On The Isle of Man
The Isle of Man has been inhabited for over 6000 years, and it was only the ice that dominated this landscape during the last age that stopped people from inhabiting it any sooner. The lives of the Celts and the people that came before them are sketchy at best, but what we do know will form the first part of this tour as I set the scene for when we arrive at Castle Rushen. We will get there using our vintage Steam Railway network which reached its 150th birthday this year. Castle Rushen is one of the finest examples of a pre-medieval-era castle to be found anywhere in Europe. Touring around the castle you will find out what life was like for the Elites in society and how this was the center of a vast sea empire that made the Isle of Man its headquarters, and in the process find out what life was like for a stranger on our shores over 1000 years ago. From there we will travel to Cregneash, the oldest folk museum in the United Kingdom, where the knowledgeable staff here will assist me in showing you what life was like on the island for centuries before the arrival of electricity and the comforts of the modern era. You will get to see Loughtan sheep, an ancient animal species that was brought here by the Celtic peoples thousands of years ago as well as the chance to take a walk down to the Sound, where a sumptuous lunch and magnificent views towards Calf of Man await. From there I will be more than happy to escort you back to your place of residence if you so wish.
