Port Sunlight
Port Sunlight
Port Sunlight is one of the finest examples of an industrial garden village. It was founded in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever (later Lord Leverhulme) to house his soap factory and his workers. He took great pleasure in helping to plan this picturesque garden village and he employed nearly thirty different architects to create its unique style. He named it after his company's flagship product 'Sunlight Soap'.
This walk starts at Port Sunlight railway station (if you are not coming by train there is plenty of free parking around the area). We will spend a very pleasant hour and fifteen minutes seeing many highlights and hearing the amazing tale of Lever Brothers and the village. Visitors on our walk have included people from all over the UK and from many other countries. Anyone who has been to Hershey in the U.S, New Lanark in Scotland, Bournville or Saltaire in England will be fascinated by Port Sunlight.
