Whose House? Part 1 – Walk
Whose House? Part 1 – Walk

25th June - Bridge Street/Watergate Street - 5pm
Take a walk around the south-western part of the city centre and see how some of our old houses have changed in architectural style, ownership and use over time. Up until the 18th century, it was common practice for premises to be used both as working and living quarters. Some streets became more genteel, with well-to-do folk getting rid of the ground floor shop, closing their section of the Rows, and creating a larger town house. In some cases an older property was demolished and a brand new town house built on the site instead. Some of these town houses are still with us, now used as shops, bars, cafes or offices. But, it wasn’t just the well-heeled who lived in the city centre. Many people settled here, including doctors, teachers, clergy, mayors, aldermen, tradesmen and working class people. During this walk, I’ll point out some former residences of people from various walks of life!
This walk finishes at Watergate Street, approximate distance 2 miles. Please note the route is not fully accessible it includes some cobbled surfaces and steps.
