Chester has been designated a Heritage Port. This walk is designed to explore the heritage of the old port of Chester and the canal which is linked to it.
The walk explores the various parts of the waterway environment and presents the challenges and opportunities of the waterways in the city’s future. This walk aims to look at the River Dee Causeway (Weir), the history of the mills and the challenges of restoring the link between the upper and lower Dee for navigation.
At Tower Wharf walk participants will also be able to visit an exhibition on the history and potential of the Chester Canal staged by the Inland Waterways Association.
Walk is free but due to limited numbers booking is essential.
Duration approx. 90 minutes. The walk will end at the Northgate Top Lock. The approximate distance of the route is half a mile.
Please note that the route involves crossing Sealand Road at the canal bridge. There are also has steps and slopes.
