Georgian festival: Anne Lister’s York Walking Tour
Open a door into York in the early 19th century
Anne Lister, of Shibden Hall was a landowner, industrialist, explorer and mountain climber, diarist and sometimes described as the first modern day lesbian. The recent BBC TV series, Gentleman Jack, brought Anne's story to a wider audience. Series 1 culminated in Anne Lister and her lover, Ann Walker, taking communion at Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, just as they did in real life on 30th of March 1834. Taking just a small portion of the 5 million or so words that Anne left us in her diaries , we are offered a peek into early 19th century york. Explore the streets of York and immerse yourself in the city that Anne loved and visited regularly.
See where Anne’s friends lived where she visited, what inspired her, where she worshipped, where she went to school, where she shopped, and partied, had her hair done, and even had her teeth cleaned!
Start at Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, at 6:00 PM and finish with a drink at Brewdog, Micklegate……. a drink in a rather special room, with a very special history, where Miss Lister herself often enjoyed her breakfast.
